Thermodynamics of the Quasi-static Growth of Griffith Cracks
نویسنده
چکیده
RESTRICTIONS on the quasi-static extension, or healing, of Griffith cracks are developed in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. It is emphasized that thermodynamics requires that (G 2r)I > 0, where i is crack speed, G the Irwin energy release rate, and 2y the work of reversible separation of the surfaces to be fractured. Implications for ‘lattice trapping’ models of cracks and for thermally-activated crack motion are discussed, as are the effects on crack growth and healing of a surface-reactive environment, in which case y must be given a definition appropriate to adsorption-altered surface properties.

Moving Three Collinear Griffith Cracks at Orthotropic Interface
This work deals with the interaction of P-waves between a moving central crack and a pair of outer cracks situated at the interface of an orthotropic layer and an elastic half-space. Initially, we considered a two-dimensional elastic wave equation in orthotropic medium. The Fourier transform has been applied to convert the basic problem to solve the set of four integral equations. These set of ...
متن کاملCracking Elements Method for Simulating Complex Crack Growth
The cracking elements method (CEM) is a novel numerical approach for simulating fracture of quasi-brittle materials. This method is built in the framework of conventional finite element method (FEM) based on standard Galerkin approximation, which models the cracks with disconnected cracking segments. The orientation of propagating cracks is determined by local criteria and no explicit or implic...
متن کاملDynamic and Quasi-Static Tensile Properties of Structural S400 Steel
The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...

Pathology is a crucial basis in the process of restoration of historical monuments. So as just by an accurate pathology, a correct and effective restoration plan will be achieved. Amongst the various and different types of damages occurring in the historic monuments, Structural cracks in the walls are very important and considered as special issues that can endanger the stability and structural...
متن کاملEffect of Through Stationary Edge and Center Cracks on Static Buckling Strength of Thin Plates under Uniform Axial Compression
Thin plate structures are more widely used in many engineering applications as one of the structural members. Generally, buckling strength of thin shell structures is the ultimate load carrying capacity of these structures. The presence of cracks in a thin shell structure can considerably affect its load carrying capacity. Hence, in this work, static buckling strength of a thin square plate wit...
